My 2015 MacBook Pro has no problem recognizing the unusual PBP resolution of half the width of a 4k display, but for my older 2008 Mac Pro that I use as my daily driver while I’m at my desk it stretches the resolution vertically which is not good. Took a lot of tinkering with the setting but you just cant seam to get the full 60Hz otherwise screen goes out of range and you get a black screen. Using new macmini the best I could do was 2560x1080 52Hz.

I recently just got a 4k Samsung monitor that supports Picture in Picture (PiP) and Picture By Picture (PBP) modes from multiple input sources, which is awesome because I tinker with a bunch of stuff on different machines at the same time. I had the same monitor LG 29EA93 and the only way I could get it to work was the older version of SwitchResX 3.8.6.
